This coastal community near the Louisiana border has one educational building housing grades K-12. When their previous free-standing auditorium and gymnasium building were destroyed by Hurricane Ike, the school district sought not only a more hurricane-resistant structure, but one that could serve as a storm shelter for the entire community.
Designed to withstand gale-force winds, the building sits 12 feet above ground atop structural concrete columns to prevent flooding and damage from storm surge. The 620-seat auditorium has state-of-the art audio-visual equipment. The gymnasium can accommodate 700 people for assemblies and events. The brick building also contains a fitness center, locker rooms and band hall. Despite several periods of rough weather, we beat the original 15-month schedule by 3 months.
